The goal of treatment at Hope Harbor is to respect the safety of the individual child, adult survivor or rape victim while respecting the integrity of the family.
Hope Harbor recognizes that rape and incest are not traumas experienced solely by the individual. Rather, they are significant, life-changing events experienced by victims, their families, partners, spouses, siblings, children, friends, etc. In fact, in some cases, the sexual assualt may be less traumatic than the breaking up of the family or friendships that follows its disclosure.
Hope Harbor views rape and incest as a combination of individual and family factors. Non-offending friends and family members are viewed as resources for the victim and the treatment process. Individual and family therapy are often necessary to enhance and/or repair the damage that sexual trauma has inflicted on not only the victim, but also the parent/child and husband/wife/partner relationship. Individual treatment is aimed at stabilizzing the managment of emotion and strengthening healthy coping skills. Family treatment focuses more on the prevention of disruption to the family during a time of crisis following disclsure of sexual abuse and trauma. Fmaily treatment can also capitalize on the strenghts of individual family members and/or the family as a unit.
