Essay Rules
Submission Guidelines:
*You must currently be a middle/high school or college student.
*Your name must be removed from all pages of submission.
*Your submission is a guarantee you are the original author of the creative work you are submitting. Fraudulent entries will disqualify you from this year’s contest.
*All submissions must come with a typed, information page containing your name, address, school name, grade, phone number, email address and your signature. As well as the name of your guardian and their signature if submitter is under 18.
*Entries should be dropped off or mailed to ONE of the following locations:
- Hope Harbor, Inc. 913 Broadway, Bowling Green, KY 42101 or call 782-5014.
- Counseling and Testing Center, Western Kentucky University, 409 Potter Hall, Bowling Green KY 42101 or call 745-3159 (attention: Elizabeth Mohon).
All submissions must meet the following deadlines and requirements:
Poems:
You may submit up to three poems, but no more than a total of three typed pages. Each poem should have its own individual, attached typed information page. Poetry entries should be typed, single spaced and formatted in Times New Roman, twelve point font.
Creative Nonfiction Essay/Short Story:
Submit an essay/short story no longer than four pages in length. Subject should relate to sexual violence; examples like its effects, personal stories, developing an argument relating to this topic. Essays should be typed, double spaced and formatted in Times New Roman, twelve point font.
Chosen design will be read at “Take Back the Night” March and Rally on Thursday, March 25, 2010 at 6pm. The march begins at the Justice Center in Bowling Green, KY. This will be read by the author or another individual deemed suitable by Hope Harbor, Inc and/or it’s SAAM committee affiliates.
Note: By submitting to this contest, you are giving Hope Harbor, Inc and it’s SAAM affiliates permission to reproduce as necessary for advertisement, educational and/or awareness purposes. You also give permission to be posted to the website of Hope Harbor, Inc. and/or it’s SAAM committee affiliates. This creative work becomes property of Hope Harbor, Inc.
History: “Take Back the Night” is a march/rally to increase awareness against sexual violence. It’s a very visual and powerful display of taking a stand against sexual violence. With 1:3 females and 1:6 males being a victim of sexual assault in their lifetime, it’s evident this is a problem that affects the entire community. So, we must help to Break the Silence and speak out against this silent epidemic.
Notification: Winners will be chosen and notified by phone or email on/or before, March 19, 2010.
