Internet Safety Program: NetSmartz.org
The NetSmartz Workshop is an interactive, educational safety resource from the National Center for Missing Children (NCMEC) for children aged 5-17, that uses age-appropriate, 3-D activites to teach children how to stay safer on the Internet. The goal of the MetSmartz Workshop is to extend the safety awarenedd of children of prevent victimization and increase self-confidence whenever they go online.
Grades K-2
Clicky, the friendly and hip spokesrobot, teaches young children in very simple terms about the possible dangers on the Internet, how to avoid them, and how to practice good "netiquette." After introducing basic uses of the Internet, Clicky introduces children to the "Webvill Outlaws." These villians represent different Internet dangers.
Each child receives an Internet Safety Pledge with safety rules as well as an original bookmark.
This is a 30 minute program.
Grades 3-6
Nettie and Webster, two Internet cyber-siblings, talk about online risks and introduce children to the "WizzyWigs." are creepy characters who represent Internet dangers. Follow-You Fiona net. Spamazoid sends junk E-mail to lots of people, usually stuff that kids don't want to see.
Each child receives an Internet Safety Pledge with safety rules as well as an original bookmark.
This is a 45 minute program.
Middle and High School
About 17 million youth ages 12 to 17 use the Internet. That's 73% of teenagers in the United States. For many of these teenagers the Internet is an intergal part of their everyday lives. They use instant messaging, chatrooms, and e-mail services to communicate with friends and relatives. They use websites to get information on health issues, for school reports, and for information on current events. Many teens exchange and play music and games via the Internet. During this program teens are taught Internet Safety Principles through real-life stories told by teens. Two of the pieces, "Amy's Choices" and "Julie's Journey," are actual recordings of victims recounting the consequences of their online choices.
This is a 60 minute program.
Professionals/Parents/Communities
This workshop is intended to help Professionals, Parents, and Communities educates themselves on Internet Safety. The workshop covers online risks for kids and teens, characteristics of an online victim, characteristics of an online predator, internet sex crimes against minors, online safety tips, what you can do, reporting suspicious online behavior, and online resources (filtering software and hardware).
This workshop ranges from 60 minutes to 3 hours for Teacher In-Services.
